Long term neurological conditions affecting children
Ideally, all children the world over would be born innately healthy, both at birth and during their later development. Unfortunately, this is not so. Numerous children all over the world, may it be in developed countries and developing ones, are each year born with neurological disorders that disable them to function properly, mostly ending into premature deaths. Others develop these conditions later on in their lives resulting into difficulties in managing their daily living and learning activities.
In the United States of America, more than a million children under the age of 18 are classified as having advanced long term neurological conditions. Below is an analysis of some long term neurological conditions that affect children under the age of 18 years.
Hyperactivity Disorder and Attention Deficit
This is a long term neurological condition that makes it hard for a kid to sit still, pay attention, or control their behavior. Mostly, it is diagnosed before the age of 7, though not always. Medically, its causes are unknown, though some studies support the theory that it is related to an imbalance in neurotransmitters in the brain. There are no known cure for the condition, but it symptoms are manageable.
Pervasive Development Disorder (PDD)
Such neurological conditions as Autism, Aspergers Syndrome are all related to PDD. Autism can be defined as a developmental disability that significantly affect the child’s verbal and nonverbal communication functions and their social interaction abilities. It is generally evident at the age of 3 years and adversely affects the child’s educational performances. Again, experts are not sure of its causes, but its symptoms are medically manageable.
Cerebral Palsy
Cerebral Palsy is a long term neurological condition that affects the proper functioning of the victim’s nerves and their muscles. This condition results from injuries that happen during the child’s birth, before its birth or shortly after its birth. Cerebral palsy can be moderate, severe or mild. The resultant disabilities range from being slightly clumsy while performing the normal living activities to being confined to a wheelchair. Basically, children with long term neurological condition have learning disabilities, mental retardation and sensory issues.
In a nutshell
Insomnia, physical and behavioral anxiety, panic attacks and strangulation are some of the other long term neurological conditions that may affect a child when growing up. According to psychologists, parents that have children that have long term neurological conditions need to undergo some basic training and education so as to be able to deal with them efficiently. And since it is a daunting task dealing with people with these sorts of conditions, parents are advised to handle them with care and with the due attention needed.
