Neurological Conditions And Symptoms
Neurological conditions and symptoms basically stem from what is happening in the human’s nervous system. They are caused by defects in the nervous system. The nervous system is split into two the Central Nervous System (CNS) and the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS). The CNS is the processing part of the nervous system while the PUS is the transmitting part. The CNS is made up of the brain and the spinal coed and processes all the sensory messages whereas the PNS made up of the rest of the body nerves, transmit the sensory messages from the body to the brain and from the brain to the rest of the body.
The symptoms of disorders are mainly observed in the peripheral nervous system. Though the symptoms vary, there are a few general symptoms that can be observed across several disorders. These include burning sensations, numbness, fatigue especially in the muscles, temporal paralysis and prickling sensations.
Pain is also another general symptom and it could either be direct pain or referred pain. Direct pain occurs in the place afflicted by injury or the disease, but referred pain occurs in a different part from the affected area. It is usually hard to diagnose this kind of pain. One can also experience heightened periods of dizziness and some symptoms may lead to the disruption of involuntary actions like breathing and the controlling of bowel movements.
Other neurological conditions and symptoms
Some other symptoms depend on the disease and the part of the body affected with the diseases. Some examples include:
- Fainting and altered levels of consciousness
- Unresponsiveness
- Difficulty in chewing
- Difficulty in swallowing
- Poor speech pattern as it becomes slurred
- Poor motor control
- Respiratory problems that could include short and labored breathing
- Seizures and paralysis
Such symptoms could indicate the severity of the condition and the patient should get quick medical attention for proper diagnosis and treatment.
Causes of the disorders and symptoms
There are varied causes of the diseases affecting the nervous system although some of the conditions are yet to have known causes and what exists presently are suggestions and theories. Some common causes of the nerve disorders include injury, which may be in the form of burns, crashing of the nerves or their detachment from the spinal cord. Fractures or spinal cord damage are also another cause of injury to the nerves. Some infections also result to nerve defects and these include hepatitis C, HIV and other viral infections, diabetes mellitus, connective tissue disorders and nutritional deficiencies, especially the lack of vitamins and minerals.
When being diagnosed, it is important that the patient has the information concerning the length and frequency of the symptoms, places affected and any genetic history that will have a bearing on the condition. Early diagnosis of the conditions is vital for effective control and treatment. It is therefore important that if any of the above symptoms occur without any known reason, the person affected should seek medical attention. Severe cases of nerve disorder could lead to loss of body parts, death or permanent nerve damage.
